THE
OPENING OF THE FIRST
HAUTE COUTURE SALON IN BELGRADE
Belgrade, 30 September 2005
Haute couture is the source of new trends. It gives the fashion
designer the greatest freedom and respects the individuality
of its clients. Haute couture is, indeed, the highest level
of culture in fashion.
Before the Second World War, Belgrade had its own haute couture
salons and ateliers, like any decent European metropolis worth
its reputation. It had just enough - not too many and not too
few. It never quite achieved the excellence of the great fashion
centres, but it was always close at their heels.
You will agree that it is now time to restore to Belgrade and
to Serbia their splendour and glamour, the reputation and the
significance which they deserve. One of the paths to attaining
this goal is fashion in its most beautiful and most authentic
embodiment.
It is fact that we Serbs are of great worth, that we are a
very talented nation, and that in a few years time we will
reclaim our place under the fashion sun. This is one of the
steps we have to take on the way to a higher quality lifestyle
- and this is going to be our contribution.
The culture of clothing has never been a cliché, but a clear
expression of the Zeitgeist, of aesthetic values and of self-respect...
We have chosen the name SALON because we were motivated by
the desire to add another dimension to the place where we work.
This place is an atelier and always will be, because it is where
we create fashion. One importance difference, though, is that
the SALON will also showcase our creations.
Here, within the precincts of THE FIRST HAUTE COUTURE SALON
IN BELGRADE, we are going to organise fashion shows, exhibitions,
classical music concerts and literary evenings...
THE FIRST HAUTE COUTURE SALON IN BELGRADE embodies our quest
to contribute as much as possible, through the quality of our
work, to the domestic, European and world fashion scenes. We
want you, us, and everyone else who recognises value and quality,
to derive from our SALON an infinite source of enjoyment and
inspiration. We need to enlist your help to achieve this.
One part of the Salon -THE SHOWROOM - will be open to the public.
The Showroom is going to be a point of sale for the SAINT
pręt-a-porter collection, which was launched in Serbia at the
end of June 2005.
We are planning to initiate many other projects because we
think that beauty is one of lifes driving spirits.
We therefore take great pleasure in presenting to you the following
two beauties:
Miss Katarina Lazarević - the face of the MILAN
ST. MARKOVIĆ brand, and
Miss Nina Krstić - the face of the SAINT
collection.
We would also like to use this opportunity to thank all the
members of the press who have followed our work to date. We
will continue to post updates on all our activities in the hope
that these will be of interest to you.
The opening of THE FIRST HAUTE COUTURE SALON IN BELGRADE will
take place on 30 September 2005 from 6 to 10 pm.

SAINT
Belgrade,
July 2005
On Thursday, 30 June, in the gardens of the ''Madera'' Restaurant,
the young fashion designer Predrag Kotarac presented his SAINT®
label to the public for the first time, under the aegis of the
House of MILAN ST. MARKOVIĆ.
SAINT® is
a commercial Pret-a-Porter label and a registered brand, conceived
as a small series with a limited number of designs.
These designs, with their recognisable style which encapsulates
the integral sensibility of this young designer, were created
for the modern and active woman. The pronounced femininity which
is characteristic of everything connected to the signature of
MILAN ST. MARKOVIĆ is present here, but in this case combined
with more overt sex-appeal.
The creations, which are innovative in cut, and for the most
part fashioned out of floaty, ethereal silks, will be made exclusively
to order in the initial period. One thing is for certain: this
collection is infused with the spirit of experimentation, which
is only to be expected of this young designer, working with
the unreserved support of his mentor. From September 2005, this
label will be available for retail at the much-anticipated Milan
St. Marković showroom, to be situated in Francuska ulica, in
the centre of the town.
This show represents the initial phase of the development of
the SAINT®
brand in Serbia.
It is interesting to note that this was the first fashion show
to be accompanied throughout by music played legally after reproduction
rights were purchased.
PIRACY IS KILLING MUSIC!
''MUSEUM
NIGHTS''
-
at last, in Belgrade, too.
Belgrade, April 2005
During my career I have attended many museum nights all over
the world. Each continent has its metropolises and almost every
metropolis holds its own Museum Nights event. It is a remarkable
way to bring culture to night owls: as the saying goes, ''If
the mountain won't go to Muhammad, then Muhammad must go to
the mountain''- this sentence wonderfully sums up what Museum
Nights are all about. AND NOW BELGRADE IS ABOUT TO PROVE TO
THE WORLD THAT IT IS A METROPOLIS!
It has long been my secret dream to bring such an event to
BELGRADE too, because we are after all one of Europes key regional
centres.
And here we are. In April 2005, BELGRADE will be organising
Museum Nights for the first time in its history.
The Serbs are a superstitious nation, so let this not be a
curse, but I hope and pray that this tradition lasts!
The fashions which you will see at our event tonight represent
the culmination and, as far as I am concerned, the most personal
part of the ''BORN IN BELGRADE'' collection. I have taken the
liberty of interweaving with the splendour of BELGRADE, which
I love above all else, two of my great inspirations: firstly,
Empress Eugenie, the wife of Napoleon III, one of the most beautiful
ladies of the second half of the 19th century and secondly,
the post World War II NEW LOOK from the second half of the 20th
century, when the great Christian Dior declared war on fashion
without fantasy and put Parisian glamour back on its feet.
I hope that we have not bitten off more than we can chew!
With love and local patriotism,
For our beloved BELGRADE!!!
I owe a great debt of gratitude to the inimitable Duška Bogataj
for her unreserved support - the best hair-stylist in BELGRADE,
to the extraordinary Marina Maric - the best make-up artist
in BELGRADE, to GRID Design Studio for their unsurpassed professionalism
and the wonderful girls who will model my dresses and with whom
it is my great honour to work: Ana Ostojić, Danica Prvulović,
Ivana Velickovic, Jovana Bajagić, Katarina Lazarević, Mirjana
Gmitrović and Sanja Radumilo.

INTERNATIONAL MOTOR SHOW, BELGRADE FAIR 05
FASCINATING! = Mercedes-Benz and Milan St. Marković
Dear friend and
associates,
''Fascinating!'' - the name of the collection says everything.
Dedicated to everybody who enjoy elegance, action and hedonism
as their lifestyle. Basic idea of the project is to connect
new collection with the new Mercedes-Benz.
This is the idea of the world without boundaries. World fascinated
by quality.
Beside our personal satisfaction with fact that Mercedes-Benz
recognized us as partner in quality, we consider this partnership
as very important improvement of Serbian fashion design in global
fashion scene.
During 2005. there will be more surprises through different
manifestations.
Respectfully
On Behalf of Milan St. Marković team

BORN
IN BELGRADE
“Rođen u Beogradu”, “Born in Belgrade”,
“Geboren in Belgrad” … any language you choose,
it means only one thing and carries only one clear message.
Fashion
culture! A cliché or a true reflection of the Zeitgeist,
of aesthetic values, of a nation’s self-esteem …?
The
ideas behind the “BORN
IN BELGRADE” collection were born out of MILAN ST.
MARKOVIĆ’s studious research of fashion history in Serbia,
with the aid of books, his own personal photo albums and those
belonging to other families of the old Belgrade, combined with
Milan’s encyclopaedic knowledge of fashion. A romantic
attempt to reclaim the once famous splendour and glamour of
Belgrade. A longing to rejoin the world we once belonged to,
bringing with us our unique standards of quality, of perfect
old-fashioned etiquette which is in vogue again, of respect
… all these qualities are innate to the collection.
The
collection, exhibited in Dom Garde, a venue once renowned for
royal receptions and balls, where Milan’s grandmother
Kruna, the guiding light of everything that Milan has created,
once won first prize for the most beautiful dress in a reception
in honour of Prince Pavle. Almost a century to the day, September
2004, the designer himself offers his vision of the fashion
of today.
The
“BORN IN BELGRADE”
collection is a celebration of the essence of Belgrade women,
of their strength, their beauty and their feisty spirit! MILAN
ST. MARKOVIĆ’s collection is intended for the WOMAN. A
woman who live her life, who is loving, fond of fun, brimming
with self-confidence, a citizen of the world, an ideal woman…
THE WOMAN!
The
basic tenets underlining MILAN ST. MARKOVIĆ’s collection,
which he will never compromise, are his commitment to the quality
of the cut and design, and his choice of natural silks, cashmere
and wool: all the highest quality materials.
On the evening of the collection, you have the chance to see
a unified whole, but with three strands, each of which has its
own distinct character: “SAINT”, “AFTER DARK”
and “MILAN ST. MARKOVIĆ”. All three created by MILAN
ST. MARKOVIĆ.
The
“BORN IN BELGRADE”
collection
will be exhibited internationally in a timetabled programme
of shows.

Collection
BACK TO BELGRADE
Ladies and Gentlemen,
A collection "BACK
TO BELGRADE" draws on the combination of top
elegance and the beauty of feminine figure. The designs based
on this principle are made of top-quality yarn, cashmere, embroidery
and the finest silk. The transparency of some pieces invokes
discreet eroticisms which emphasise Marković's refined slant
on women. The influence of women's folk costumes of the 19th-century
Serbia is noticeable. The contemporary take on the traditional,
combined with the two-decade experience, provides at once a
light and critical angle on current trends.
Mr. MILAN ST. MARKOVIĆ, with his highly-refined
taste, has produced a perfume of a classical touch, VELVET
IRON. In conjunction with Mane, one of the world's 10
leading companies in the flavour and fragrance trade, he has
created a unique touch of lasting elegance. This is one more
contribution to Marković's vision of a woman as the image of
God's perfect creation. This occasion is a first-ever launch
both in Belgrade and across the world.
... '' An artist, for example a painter, can make his/her way
to the stage by producing a good or new idea. Sometimes all
one needs is a scandal.
Designers are expected to create THE NEW, a new style, and sometimes
to defeat his/her own style. However, beauty and greatness do
not always come with the novelty. And what is it that could
be new nowadays? It can certainly be conjured by old already
seen things, but it has to carry its own personal mark to express
something quite unique...''
MILAN ST. MARKOVIĆ
From involvement in haute couture collections, having created
stage costumes for opera and theatre as well as images for Boney
M, China, Warlock... via promotional campaigns for international
companies such as British American Tobacco, Seagram's, Appolinaris
& Schweppes, Milan Markovic has confirmed his authority
in the field of style and design, and he has found himself in
the setting of the Museum of Applied Arts in Hamburg and also
at the World Exhibition EXPO 2000 in Hanover.
Milan is now here with us in Belgrade after having lived and
worked for 36 years in Germany. He wants to enrich the culture
and education in Serbia the way his ancestors had done. He is
a founder of the Serbian-German Forum for Art and Design,
an organization that works on promoting young artists.
Milan's creative team, inspired by his enormous energy, operates
on the principle known here as ''The German Discipline''. MEDONT,
the shoes factory, has adopted our philosophy on high-standard
quality and design.
We are delighted to be able to introduce Mr Milan Marković
to Belgrade. This is most certainly his biggest challenge, the
challenge of his own people!
