Belgrade, August 2004

“Rođen u Beogradu”, “Born in Belgrade”, “Geboren in Belgrad” … any language you choose, it means only one thing and carries only one clear message.

Fashion culture! A cliché or a true reflection of the Zeitgeist, of aesthetic values, of a nation’s self-esteem …?

The ideas behind the “BORN IN BELGRADE” collection were born out of MILAN ST. MARKOVIĆ’s studious research of fashion history in Serbia, with the aid of books, his own personal photo albums and those belonging to other families of the old Belgrade, combined with Milan’s encyclopaedic knowledge of fashion. A romantic attempt to reclaim the once famous splendour and glamour of Belgrade. A longing to rejoin the world we once belonged to, bringing with us our unique standards of quality, of perfect old-fashioned etiquette which is in vogue again, of respect … all these qualities are innate to the collection.

The collection, exhibited in Dom Garde, a venue once renowned for royal receptions and balls, where Milan’s grandmother Kruna, the guiding light of everything that Milan has created, once won first prize for the most beautiful dress in a reception in honour of Prince Pavle. Almost a century to the day, September 2004, the designer himself offers his vision of the fashion of today.

The “BORN IN BELGRADE” collection is a celebration of the essence of Belgrade women, of their strength, their beauty and their feisty spirit! MILAN ST. MARKOVIĆ’s collection is intended for the WOMAN. A woman who live her life, who is loving, fond of fun, brimming with self-confidence, a citizen of the world, an ideal woman… THE WOMAN!

The basic tenets underlining MILAN ST. MARKOVIĆ’s collection, which he will never compromise, are his commitment to the quality of the cut and design, and his choice of natural silks, cashmere and wool: all the highest quality materials.

On the evening of the collection, you have the chance to see a unified whole, but with three strands, each of which has its own distinct character: “SAINT”, “AFTER DARK” and “MILAN ST. MARKOVIĆ”. All three created by MILAN ST. MARKOVIĆ.

The “BORN IN BELGRADE” collection will be exhibited internationally in a timetabled programme of shows.
